This study includes detailed topographic surveys of the sites, conducting hydrological and geotechnical studies and proposing a most economical and feasible rail route and its connecting to national railway grid of Pakistan Railways. 1.Feasibility Study of New Rail Link from Chaman (Pakistan) to Kandhar (Afghanistan) (117 Km)

The study was aimed to provide a rail link between Pakistan and Afghanistan upto Kandhar over a length of 107 KM in the first phase of rail link from Chaman (Pakistan) to Kushka (Turkemenistan) to Central Asian countries, which were totally land locked and have no access to outside world, as a result of which lot of potential and hidden wealth of Central Asian countries is unable to be moved to the outside world. The purpose of study was to determine the traffic potential of the area, find out the best possible route, design of complete Railway System in Afghanistan after carrying out a detailed topographic survey, hydrological and geo-technical survey, environment impact assessment etc. The project was also meant to provide transportation facility for Afghanistan people for import and export as per their needs.

2.Feasibility Study of Islamkot – Thar Coal Rail Link (667 Km)

This study was meant to provide rail link to Thar Coal Fields in Sind province of Pakistan for its better exploitation and development needs and to link this coal reserves area, with national Railway grid of the country. Study involved to replace about 106 KMs of existing MG track into Broad Gauge in addition to provision of about 100 KMs of new B.G. track alongwith the complete infrastructure of yards, stations & other buildings, embankment & X-drainage works, signaling and telecommunication and proposals for maintenance facilities of infrastructure & rolling stock. Study also desired to choose the best route, preparation of capital cost estimates, maintenance & operation cost and then carrying out the financial & economical appraisal to see to its viability on the basis of traffic forecast to be determined by us.

7.Identification of defects of existing five Major Bridges & proposing remedial measures for rehabilitation/re-construction of Bridges.

Investigation of five major bridges of Pakistan Railway was carried out to evaluate their existing capacity and residual life. The following bridges included in the investigation have huge steel and masonry structures.

1. China Creek Bridge over sea on Kiemari-Karachi Section.
2. Khushalgarh Bridge over River Indus (Near Khohat)
3. Chenab Bridge (near Chiniot) over River Chenab
4. Attock Bridge (near Attock) over River Indus
5. Ravi Bridge (near Lahore) over River Ravi

The bridges are amongst the largest bridges in Pakistan and are of great importance in respect of their size and location.

The study included the following items:

1. Condition Survey
2. Model Design Analysis
3. Measurement of Strain under dynamic loads with modern strain measurement equipment by installing strain gauges at various locations of the bridges.
4. Fatigue Analysis on the basis of data collected through dynamic field-testing.

The purpose of assignment was to ease the curves on the section with the objective to introduce higher speed. The work involved detailed, condition survey of existing bridges, topographic survey, redesigning of curves etc for a train speed of 200 KMH. It also involved extension of existing bridges as well as construction of new bridges to accommodate new alignment of track. Evaluation of existing bridges for higher speed of 140KM was also included in the study.

21.Consultancy Services For Feasibility Study for Transportation Needs of Reko Diq Copper Mine Development Project of Tethyan Copper Company.

The subject study was awarded to PRACS by Tethyan Copper Company (Canada). For transportation of semi refined copper ore and raw materials between mine site – Port Qasim new railway line, yards, station buildings, bridges etc. will have to be constructed and existing lines, and its operational capacity will have to be upgraded.
